Well, l am a product of this.Paul from permo Africa taught me at my first PDC in 2021 and the spillover effects of this training can be seen in my work at the Shegenerators Perma Hub.
Really Carolyn it is the one thing that gives me hope, how good ideas spread so quickly and you are such a great example of how this works. you have gone on to magnify this work many times over through your work since 2021.
Astounding Steve! I hope this is just the first in more studies about the tangible impacts of permaculture. Curious to know what you think a "leveling up" in this field would look like? Going deeper to accelerate change amongst those already trained? Or expanding the breadth of people who are familiar with the principles? There are so many people with the knowledge but they face frustrations trying to implement and even train others beyond the basics due to lack of materials and supplies. Wheelbarrows, watering cans, seeds, etc.
Good question, yes there is a clear need for developing support structures to reinforce key functions. Currently planning a regional PDC in Teso, linking 50 villages through a core training and support team of 12 regional organisers. The intention is to create a credit union which will be managed by its stakeholders, a honey co-operative and a seedbank. The CU we hope to seed with some funds and it can act as a savings and loan hub for the members to buy tools and cover emergency expenses, backed by a business plan for sorts. In Chapter 14 of the Permaculture Designers manual it is suggested to build support structures around key functions, food, shelter, livelihood, communications, transport, health, future planning and threats. so we are working to this plan.
Excellent! Locally-organized financial cooperatives are a great idea. Fantastic that there is enough of a critical mass of people trained in these principles for the concept to be implemented and hopefully take hold. Village banking, peer lending, local cooperative financial institutions, etc are all tried and true methods for developing some level of financial self-reliance.
We have a lot to plan and organize but all of those potentials are there. This network and developed since a PDC we ran in 2020 and is a lot to do with the hard fork of Deborah Aluka, another extraordinary pioneer. I may have mentioned her, but she has been sick recently.
Wonderful to read and see the impact of your work like this- thanks to the Permaculture Association for this direct analysis and impact review. Many of us have known the importance of your work and your dedication over the years. That it is finally charted so it can be replicated is most impactful and necessary. Well done for continuing the good fight against all odds.
Thank you for that, and we have been pleasantly surprised and very interested to see how far the initial training has travelled. Looking forward to next years' regional PDC in Teso we hope to have the opportunity to reinforce achievements this far and apply some of the lessons learned.

Well you also played a part in the online training, by simplifying those complex subjects and making them extremely adaptable.👏🏿
thank you... it has been great to work together like this

I hadn't heard yet of Deborah but look forward to when the time is right!
